    Cytotec for induction of labor

that was currently on duty wanted me to try cytotec instead. But cytotec normally just helps get the cervix ready for labor cause sometimes just pitocin will not dialate you and you could wind up needing a c section. They placed 1/2 a pill up by my cervix and I had to stay laying down for 1 hr. I was so Happy I was given this instead of pitocin. I work as an l&d nurse, and cytotec is routinely used on this unit. My nurse told me that after 3 hrs she would check me and I would more than likely need another 1/2 pill and then pitocin once my Dr. After about 1 1/2 hrs after having the first 1/2 pill incerted I went into full blown labor. Unfortunately we have many elective inductions;cytotec is used to ripen the cervix. My H20 broke after 30 min of contractions and I had a healthy girl 5 hrs later. using pitocin will not do much good when the cervix is closed and thick. We have been using it here for 5 years and I have yet to see any bad outcomes. Occasionally uterus will get hyperstimulated but same happens with pitocin and there is treatment readily available if that happens. Other times pt's are sent from office to be induced d/t medical conditions and cytotec is used again d/t unfavorable cervix. The safety and scientific validity of this study is the responsibility of the study sponsor and investigators. Research has examined the pharmacokinetics of different administration routes and effects on uterine contractility, side effects, and safety. Listing a study does not mean it has been evaluated by the U. Vaginal misoprostol has been shown to be superior over oral administration however patients often prefer a more tolerable route. It stimulates both cervical ripening and uterine contractions, thus making it an ideal induction agent for unfavorable cervices. Misoprostol, a prostaglandin E1 analogue, is a widely accepted induction agent, that has been proven safe and effective for induction of labor. Buccal administration has already been shown to be as effective as vaginal misoprostol for cervical ripening and induction in both first trimester and second trimester abortions. There is minimal research comparing buccal versus vaginal for third trimester induction of labor. The investigators study is a prospective, double blinded, randomized control trial comparing vaginal misoprostol and buccal misoprostol in equal dosages of 25 mcg.

Main outcome is as follows: Cesarean Section (CS) rate, acid-base status in cord blood, Apgar score (Propess®) (aor = 2.9 (1.6–5.2)). Induction of labor with misoprostol, given as an oral solution to drink every second hour, gives a low rate of CS, without affecting maternal or fetal outcome. Even today, hundreds of thousands of women will die or suffer high levels of morbidity because of complications related to delivery [1]. One of the greatest challenges in obstetric care is induction of labor. In 2011, labor was induced in 15–20% of all singleton pregnancies in Sweden [2–7]. I'm from the July board but thought I was ask a delivery question here to see if anyone had any recent experience. I am 41 weeks today and no signs of progression, so my doc is going to start induction tomorrow night. The plan is so start with Cytotec to ripen my cervix as it's still completely closed. It's crazy to be so anxious but when it's finally here, it's like, wait I'm not ready! Haha I took Cytotec to get my cervix ready for my pitocin induction. When I was checked the next morning (before pit) I didn't show any progression but after the pitocin was started it went crazy fast. I was due on June 23 and after 3-count em 3, membrane sweeps I was still almost 1cm dilated and 40% effaced. I had cervidil first and had no progression so they next day they gave my cytotec orally for 3 doses every 2 hours. No way of knowing if the cytotec helped or not but I would call it a good experience. Went in to have cytotec tablet placed at noon on July 3rd. Our baby girl was born at on July 4th:)I was so so so nervous about labor and now almost 3 weeks afterwards it was the best and most exciting day of my life! With the cytotec I went from 1cm 50% effaced to 4cm 80% effaced but they still wanted more before starting pitocin so I had another cervidil that night. They monitored me for a few hrs and then sent me home. By 5am I was 6cm and fully effaced so they started pitocin and I had my son within 2 hours and only pushed 20 mins. After breaking my water, getting an epidural, having contractions and 26 hours of labor, I had an emergency c section due to only progressing to only 3 cm.
